Side B - [Interior]

The poem, printed on the sketch side of the exhibit, offers Gest’s perception, her cycles of thought: birth, life, death. In concluding that death is but a “return to light” she shows us her peace. Her poem isn’t a struggle to define abstractions, but a play to find the answers.

The pot of daffodil bulbs on the interior window side of the tableau completes the exhibition. According to her friend Miriam Thrall, Gest’s last words were “It’s a splendid day for planting daffodils.” Thus the bulbs finishes the cylce but also opens to new ones, invoking Gest’s spirit and our continuing effort to understand her.
