Drawing the lines

In making our exhibitions, we were all unifed by the idea of "With or Without Gest". As someone with a space in her name and paintings in the library, Gest has an unquestionable presence on Haverford's campus. However, the characterization of her presence differs from student to student. Interrogating her and ourselves, we came up with three distinct projects.

The exhibitions came out of a series of aspects of Gest that we wanted to convey. For Veins, the exhibitors explored the significance of the line and it's meanings in Gest's painting. They saw it as not just a line, but a horizon, a bridge, a vein, between Margaret's works. For the exhibitors of Daffodils, they wondered how Margaret's poetry conveyed her love of botany and the metaphysical. In From the Ashes , the exhibitors wanted to question the purpose of art and how its position as an object with in a space, changes its perception and the perception of the space.

Thanks also to Terry Snyder, Maiza Hixon, Ashok Gangadean, Margaret Gest, and John Muse, the critics and the muses for our exhibitions.

In creating these exhibits, we relied heavily on the care and support of library staff, especially Bruce Bumbarger, Terry Snyder, and many other memers of the library staff who not only provided us with Gest's work, but also with technical assistance and creative insight. Without them, these exhibitions wouldn't have been executed.

Special thanks also to Laurie Allen and Michael Zarafoneti, whose expertise in website technology was essential in the construction of this website!

Thank you!
